Overview
Komodor's Cost Overview gives you a centralized, real-time breakdown of your Kubernetes infrastructure spend, helping you track actual monthly costs, identify optimization opportunities, and build trust in cost-saving recommendations. It reflects both real cloud costs (AWS, GCP, Azure) and active/potential savings from optimization actions like Rightsizing and Intelligent Pod Placement.
Prerequisites
- An agent update is required per cluster
- Agent version 2.12.0 and above
- Metrics collection enabled
- For intelligent pod placement & automated rightsizing capabilities, Komodor’s admission controller should be installed.
- A relevant notification will appear if the agent isn’t up-to-date
- To generate valuable, significant analysis, we recommend waiting at least 7 days after the agent update to review your data.
Cloud Costs
Komodor fetches infrastructure costs by pulling pricing data directly from:
- AWS public price list & Spot Price History
- GCP and Azure retail pricing APIs
- Instance metadata (type, region, lifecycle, OS)
How It Works:
- Pricing is refreshed periodically (daily for OD, hourly for spot)
- Per-node hourly cost is calculated based on type, OS, region, and pricing model
- Costs are normalized (CPU/memory split, GPU-aware)
- Fallback pricing is used when cloud cost data is missing (see below)
This ensures your cost view matches your cloud bill, supporting trust and alignment across platform and FinOps teams.
Monthly Cost & Savings Breakdown
In the Cost Overview page, Komodor provides visibility into your:
- Monthly cost, broken down by Allocated vs Unallocated
- Monthly savings, generated from rightsizing and intelligent pod placement
- Potential savings, to demonstrate how much more you can save using automated rightsizing as well as intelligent pod placement
Each feature has a dedicated view where you can drill down into specific clusters & workloads and enable automation.
Understanding Discounts in Komodor
Real cloud costs often don’t reflect what you actually pay due to:
- Enterprise-level negotiated discounts
- Reserved Instances or Savings Plans
- Custom pricing agreements
Coming soon - to account for this, Komodor lets you define your discount strategy at the organization level.
Configuring Discount Settings
Accessible via:
Settings > Cost Settings > Discount Settings
Key Settings:
- Pricing Fallback (already exists)
In case real pricing cannot be retrieved, you can configure:- Default CPU monthly cost
- Default Memory monthly cost
- Enterprise Discount Program
- Enter your EDP % discount per cloud provider
- The default discount is set to 0%
- The discount is automatically applied across all cost calculations- on historical and live cost data
- Saving Plans (coming soon!)
- Choose between 1-year or 3-year plans
- Configure payment terms (All upfront / Partial / No upfront)
Next steps - in the future, Komodor plans to integrate CUR to get the actual prices you pay for cloud infrastructure.
